If you’re thinking of introducing a new puppy to your home environment it’s important you understand that puppies need a lot of attention – and if you can’t devote plenty of time to your new pup it’s probably best not to get one until you can commit to him fully. If you do have a lot of time on your hands, getting a new puppy is very exciting and you are almost guaranteed to love the experience – even when it comes to cleaning up after your puppy. If you want the best chance of giving your puppy the happiness it deserves, have a look at the following ways you can make your new puppy happy from day one.

1.     Choose the Right Name for Your New Puppy

Choosing from one of the many dog names is one of the hardest jobs, but it’s a job that needs to be carefully considered. It may not make a difference to your dog as such, but if you get the name wrong at the beginning you’re going to regret it in the future. You can’t change a dog’s name in the future because it will undo all the work you’ve done when it comes to training.

2.     Give Your Puppy the Attention It Deserves

Puppies require a lot of attention so it’s important you give it to them as much as possible. If you’re not taking them on long walks or giving them a wash, you’re usually going to be playing with them at home or cleaning up after them.

3.     A Healthy Diet Is the Way Forward

Choosing the right diet for your new puppy could pay dividends in the future. If your puppy doesn’t get the right diet, it could get lazy – and it could also be the difference when it comes to a longer life. Don’t feed your puppy rubbish just because you’re too lazy to go to the shop to get more food, and always stick to a puppy diet until your puppy is at least 12 months old.

4.     Walk Your Dog Regularly

It’s important your puppy gets to see the world without being let off in the garden all the time. There is usually a period before your new puppy is allowed out in the open, but once it is, take it for a walk straight away. It’s always wise to walk your dog in the morning and in the evening so it gets enough exercise. Granted, it’s not always possible to give all your time to your new puppy – but you’ll need to make sure you devote enough time for walks and other adventures.

5.     Puppy Training Classes Should Be Considered

Most dog owners don’t opt for puppy training classes and later regret it when their dogs don’t have basic training. Take your new puppy to training classes during its early months and you will benefit from a well-behaved dog in the future.

It’s not all rosy being a dog owner and you will sometimes wonder to yourself why you bothered getting one in the first place. However, if you train your puppy right, he will grow into a dog that’s full of love and you will be glad you went through the experience after all.
