Airport Scam Takes Pet Buyers Money
Have you been looking at Craigslist or in the classifieds hoping
to find that perfect dog for Christmas? If so, be very careful. Unfortunately, people are being scammed and it’s not just happening at Christmas time.
Patricia Mills was looking for two English Bulldog puppies for her daughters for Christmas but she was part of an airport scam that took her money and left her with no puppies. She said that she saved for a year to buy the puppies. She found an ad in Craigslist and communicated with the seller through email. The seller said that she had to move to New York and was looking for “a loving and caring home” to leave them with.
The only problem with this scenario is that once Mills wired the $200 for the puppies, the seller told her that she needed to wire another $200 for each puppy for liability insurance. She was told that she would be refunded the money for the liability insurance when the puppies were delivered. She tried to wire that money but then the seller told her to request a refund and wire it to a second location. Mills started getting suspicious. In these scams, the seller keeps requesting money and tries to get as much money from the buyer as possible.
She found out that this happens all the time but it happens even more around Christmas. She was out about $800 for the puppies she never received. Usually these scams can be traced out of the country and there isn’t much that can be done to get your money back. So, buyer BEWARE! Once again, it is best to find that new puppy or dog at an animal shelter or a rescue!
We also want to caution you about just going out and getting a dog on the spur of the moment. Make sure you are ready for the responsibility of owning a dog. When you adopt a dog or even buy a dog, that dog is expecting you to give it a forever home. You will have to take care of the dog and spend money on the dog and you need to make sure you are ready for that responsibility. Check out this cost calculator for owning a dog. If you are thinking about getting a dog, you might use the calculator to find out the approximate cost of owning a dog.
