AKC Recognized New Dog Breeds
The American Kennel Club says the three most popular dogs or breeds of dogs in the United States are the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and Yorkshire Terrier. Every so often the AKC expands their list of breeds. Three new dog breeds were added to the American Kennel Club’s Registry. These three new dog breeds were announced on January 26, 2011. The first new breed of dog recognized by the AKC was the Entlebucher Mountain Dog. These dogs are in the Swiss Mountain Dog family and are one of four types of these kind of dogs and are the smallest of the Swiss Mountain Dog family. They strive to please their owners. They were named after a town in Switzerland–Entlebuch, Switzerland. They were bred to be cattle drivers or cattle herders and overtime they became livestock guardians. They are small dogs but don’t let their size fool you. They can manage animals as big as horses and hogs. These dogs are working dogs, very determined and very smart. Because these dogs are born to work they need plenty of exercise so they require space to run and play. These dogs can weigh up to about 65 pounds. They are a medium to large dog and they are an ideal family pet. They are good with kids but a little weary around strangers. Their lifespan is up to 15 years.
The next dog introduced as a new dog breed is the Norwegian Lundehund. These dogs have six toes on every foot including a dew claw. They also have an extra joint in their neck which lets them look back up over the top of their head all the way back to the top of their head which touches their back. Meaning they can turn their head 180 degrees. Their shoulders are built so they can display their front legs out very wide. This is the reason these dogs were bred to hunt Puffin birds in northern Norway. The Puffin birds were in nests on very steep cliffs and the Norwegian Lundehund had the anatomy that would literally let them scale the cliff to get to the Puffin bird and the nest. If they fell they could sort of hug the cliff to help break their fall or keep them from falling. These dogs have great personalities. They are extremely loving, very playful, and they make a good family dog. These dogs can also be weary of strangers so they should have good socialization at a young age. These are small dogs from about 10 to 15 pounds. This dog has a double coated which means they have a soft undercoat and a rough outercoat. Because of this double coat, the dog has a lot of hair so regular brushing is suggested.
The last breed of dog is the Xoloitzcuintli . These dogs are an ancient breed making them the oldest breed in the Americas. They are from the jungles of Mexico. There are two types of this dog. There is the coated Xoloitzcuintli and the hairless Xoloitzcuintli. It was registered with the AKC as the Mexican Hairless Dog but lost its registration with the AKC. This dog was developed by the Aztec Indians and were believed to have healing powers. They believed the hairless dog had healing powers because the body heat of this dog was on the surface of the dog. They would put the dog in bed with elderly people or people that suffered from arthritis and the heat would be curative and therapeutic for those people. These dogs need a lot of socialization, a lot of training, and a lot of attention. They come in three different sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. A standard breed of this dog can weigh as much as 40 to 60 pounds.
The three most important things when choosing a dog: 1) Know why you want the dog–do you want it to lay around or go out running with you? 2) You should research the breed and match the natural tendencies of the dog to your lifestyle 3) You need to realize that dogs take time, money and attention. If you can’t give them what they need then you shouldn’t get a dog.
