Are dogs as smart as 2 year-old kids?  The results are in and according to Live Science even the average dog has the mental abilities of a 2 year-old child.  Language development tests were given and from these it was learned that average dogs can learn 165 words, including signals and gestures, which is similar to what a 2 year-old child can learn.  Dogs in the top 20 percent in intelligence can learn 250 words.

The smarter dogs which are Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds have about the same intelligence level as a 2.5 year-old.  Even though they found that dogs ranked with the 2 year-olds in language they determined that dogs were better in basic arithmetic and social smarts.  It is hard to believe that dogs can do basic arithmetic!  If you don’t believe it watch the video above to see Maggie do basic arithmetic.  It is absolutely amazing!  Dogs were also found to show spatial problem-solving skills.  Spatial problem-solving skills involve finding valued items, such as treats, finding better routes such as the fastest way to a favorite chair, and figure out how to operate latches and simple machines.

Dogs also show basic emotions.  All of us have seen our dogs express happiness, anger, and disgust.
