Designer Dogs

Designer dogs are a cross between two purebreds.  They include dogs such as Goldendoodles which are a Golden Retriever/Poodle mix, Cavachons which are a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Bichon Frise mix and Puggles which are a Pug/Beagle mix, just to name a few.  These are a few of the high-end mixed breeds you can find in your local park or in the arms of celebrities.  Ellen Degeneres and Miley Cyrus both own Maltipoos which are a Maltese/Poodle mix and Tiger Woods owns a Labradoodle which is a Labrador Retriever/Poodle mix.

People like the designer dogs because of their varied characteristics.  Take the Labradoodle for example…they have the personality and size of a Labrador Retriever and the minimal shedding of a Poodle.  Cockapoos are a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix and result in an intelligent, hypoallergenic water dog.  The top designer dogs, also called Hybrid dogs, are the Cavachon, Chiweenie, Chorkie, Goldendoodle, Labradoodle and the Puggle.  The Labradoodle is the first known case of a designer breed.

Another type of designer dog that is growing in popularity is the Pomsky, a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky.  They are adorable and look a lot like a small Husky.  Their coat is long and silky and their coloring is usually a mixture of black, white and grey.  These dogs can be rather expensive!  You can expect to pay more than $1000 for one and don’t be surprised if you end up paying two or three thousand dollars for one.

A couple of interesting facts:

  • Designer dogs live longer than their purebred ancestors
  • Designer dogs cost 25-50% more than their purebred ancestors
  • The American Kennel Club recognizes three times as many designer breeds as purebreds
