Does Your Puppy Have Hiccups
It is very common for puppies to get hiccups. Hiccups are caused by spasms in the puppies’ diaphragms that pull air into their lungs. This causes their vocal cords to move which creates the sound of a hiccup. If your puppy has the hiccups, it is probably nothing to worry about. Hiccups usually last a couple of minutes. All breeds of dogs and all sizes of dogs can get the hiccups. As a puppy gets older, normally around one year old, he will outgrow the hiccups.
It is important to realize that your puppy’s hiccups are normal. Be patient and the hiccups will usually go away on their own. It might help to walk your puppy or play with him. Exercising your puppy could change his breathing pattern which might help the hiccups go away. Giving your puppy a treat might also help get rid of his hiccups. Eating a meal, snacking, or drinking water may help change your puppy’s breathing pattern and can help get rid of the hiccups.
If exercising your puppy by walking or playing with him doesn’t seem to help, try to get your puppy to relax by massaging and petting him. If your puppy likes to take a bath, you might try giving your puppy a relaxing sow bath. Hiccups can be caused by stress or by a minor stomach disorder, so keep your puppy away from other animals he’s not familiar with. They might cause him to become angry or stressed, aggravating his hiccups. Hiccups can also be caused by eating too fast. Eating or drinking water too fast stretches the nerves in the neck triggering the reflex, thus the hiccups.
Even though it is quite common for puppies to get the hiccups, if he hiccups and regurgitates his food on a regular basis, you need to take your puppy to your vet as soon as possible. Regurgitation means he is suddenly upchucking undigested food or water with hardly any effort. Vomiting is totally different than regurgitating his food. Vomiting requires heaving, wrenching and abdominal activity and it usually takes more time and effort than regurgitation.
