Dog treats are an important part of every dog’s diet and lifestyle, and it is common to see a lot of owners buy tasty and lavish treats for their dogs like bacon, pig ears, and cheese snacks. On the other end, you can find a lot of owners who feed table scraps to dogs as treats. However, just because dog treats are only a small indulgence in the dog’s diet, it does not mean it will not affect its health. If you are looking to keep your dog healthy and active, you need to get it some natural dog treats like baby carrots and stop feeding it the unhealthy ones.

In this day and age, it has become increasingly common to see obese dogs and other pets that are facing a number of health conditions. Often, their conditions are quite painful. Among dogs, overweight increases the risks of cancer and heightened heart disease. In the United States, more than 40 percent of dogs are either overweight or obese. If you look at obesity and related disorders, you will see that most of them are chronic, expensive and incurable, but mostly preventable, and treats play a large role in it.

Dog treats, in fact, have a big place in the daily diet of canines. Apart from their role of adding a bit of spice to the dog’s daily diet, treats are also a great way to motivate and reward dogs, which is useful for house training. However, a lot of the dog treats you see on the market today are full of sugar and fat, making them really tasty. With so many ingredients, it’s not surprising to see most dogs develop a habit for them, dancing and howling and doing lots of things until they get their treats.

Unfortunately, even one high calorie treat like  that, including cheese snacks, bacon, and beef, can meet around a fifth or fourth of the everyday calorie requirement of a small dog. When the dog starts eating too much of them each day, it can become really dangerous, and the fact is that most owners feed their dogs at least two or three treats in a single attempt.  The end result is, of course, overweight and obese dogs.

In other words, a lot of dog owners today do not take their dog treats into consideration when looking at the caloric intake of their pets. If you are interested in the health of your dog, you should look for organic dog treats or homemade ones. It is always best to give your dog whole or natural foods. The best treats are crunch vegetables, because they are good for the dog to bite and chew on and healthy as well.

Cooked yams, celery, and green beans are great options for healthy dog treats, but the key here is to be experimental. Try out different food combinations and natural dog treats and see what your dog likes. If you have a puppy or just recently bought a dog, you can find it a lot easier to get it into the habit of eating natural dog treats. Some natural products are bad for dogs regardless of their quantity of consumption, like raisins, grapes, garlic, and onions. Remember not to give them to your dog at any cost.
