October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month and with the rising number of dogs in shelters, there are more dogs in need of a home than ever.  If you are thinking about getting a dog, check out your local shelters first and help a dog that needs a home.  Shelter dogs or abandoned dogs make great pets.  We adopted a lab from Lab Rescue and rescued an abandoned puppy from an oil rig site.  The lab’s name was Summer and we named the abandoned puppy Teddy.  Summer was a great dog.  She was with us for about 5 years until she passed away in the Fall of 2008. She had liver cancer and she fought it for about 6 months.  We found Teddy in the summer of 2007 and he is still with us.  He is a dog with an unique personality and we have truly enjoyed him!

If you can’t adopt there are other ways that you can help a dog that needs a home.  One way is to write about pet adoption on your Facebook status in the “What’s on your mind?” box at the top of your page.  You can write “October Is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month.  Give a homeless dog a home and save a life.  Adopt a dog!  Go to http://www.dogsnpawz.com and find a shelter dog by using the widget in the sidebar or go to http://www.petfinder.com.  Nothing is better than a loveable, loyal shelter dog!”

If you have your own website or blog you could write about adopting a shelter dog.  If you have adopted a dog yourself, you could write about your adopted dog!  You could also add a Petfinder widget or banner to your website or blog similar to the one that I added in the sidebar of this website.

Donate to your local shelter or rescue group.  When I purchase dog supplies at PetSmart I always donate and add it on to my bill.  It’s an easy way to give money!

Sign up as a foster parent or shelter volunteer.

Tweet, retweet and repeat the following “October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month.  Give a homeless dog a home and save a life.  Adopt a dog!  http://www.petfinder.com#save dogs”

There are many ways to help homeless dogs.  Please share your ideas with us!
