Due to the bad economic conditions, puppy thefts are on the rise.  Thieves are stealing puppies to give them away as gifts or to keep for themselves because they don’t want to pay the purchase price or they don’t want to pay the adoption fee.  There are also criminals stealing them and selling them on the black market either on the internet, at flea markets, or at roadside sales. Small dogs, such as Yorkies, Maltese, Pomeranians are more likely to be stolen.

If you are buying a dog there are several things to be aware of.  If you are buying from a roadside sale you don’t know where the dog has come from.  You also don’t know where the dog has come from if you are buying from the internet.  You really shouldn’t buy a dog from the internet or from a roadside sale.  You should meet the person you are buying the dog from and you should have a good relationship with them.

Tips for protecting your dog:

  • Always keep your dog on a leash
  • Don’t leave your dog unattended in the yard
  • Be cautious with giving out information about your dog
  • Never leave your dog unattended in a car
  • Don’t tie your dog outside a store

Having a micro-chip implanted between your dog’s shoulders is another way to help keep him safe.  Micro-chips can be used for cats.  It doesn’t hurt your pet to have the micro-chip implanted.  It is just like getting a vaccination.
