When We Gave a Dog for a Gift!
Gifting a Dog
Not too long ago mom posted a guest article about Gift Ideas for Dog Lovers. The guest author gave tips for gifting a dog to a friend. There were a couple of comments suggesting that it might not be a good idea to give a friend a dog! While we agree for the most part with those comments, we had to share a story about when mom gave a puppy to a friend for a present
My human sis was a senior in high school and she played softball. For the end of the season banquet, the seniors always give the coach a present. Her coach’s name was Chart. So anyway, Chart’s dog Goldie had crossed over the Rainbow Bridge right at the beginning of the season. Chart had had Goldie for a very long time…we think Goldie was around 15 years old. Goldie was very special to Chart and of course, it was very hard for Chart when she lost Goldie.
Mom and sis decided that maybe they needed to get Chart another dog cause all of Chart’s friends said that she would never get another dog on her own. Chart lives by herself so they felt she needed another friend and of course, mom and sis surely knew what was best for Chart! So the journey to find a dog for Chart began. Mom and sis spent many hours researching different breeds of dogs. They talked to Chart’s sister and her best friend to see what they thought and everyone was in agreement that it was a good idea for the softball team to give Chart a dog.
They decided that Chart needed a small dog that didn’t shed a lot. After spending a lot of time researching little dogs that shed very little, they decided on a Morkie. If you don’t know what a Morkie is, it is part Maltese, part Yorkie. Sis and mom started looking for a Morkie and they found a lady that had two Morkies–a brother and a sister.
The lady lived at least an hour away so on a Friday evening the humans got in the car and drove to look at the two Morkies. They were both precious and mom wanted to get both of them, but they decided they probably shouldn’t. It took awhile to decide but they finally decided to get Chart the little girl Morkie.
The banquet wasn’t for three more weeks so we had to keep that little dog at our house. It was so little and it would chase us big dogs around the yard! We were kind of scared of that yappy, little thing! It only weighed about 2 pounds. Can you believe a dog that only weighs 2 pounds?

Meet Punkin! Isn’t she precious!
Sis named the little dog Punkin and mom and sis bought little doggie clothes for her, a little carrying case to take her around in, an inflatable pen, toys, food, and all kinds of stuff! They got her vaccinated and took her to be groomed before the banquet. We were all getting attached to this little thing called Punkin. Mom had almost decided that she was going to keep Punkin, but we already had four dogs
Gifting a Dog: Good Idea or Bad Idea?
The big day was here and we really didn’t know what Chart was going to think about a new puppy. We were all a little lot nervous; in fact, you could say we were overwrought (VBP) with worry! Mom left Punkin in her little carrying case in the car during the banquet. Everyone ate, Chart introduced the seniors and talked about them, they watched the highlight video and then the time came to give Chart her present. Sis and the other three seniors were on stage and sis was telling Chart how she was going to like this present, all the while holding Punkin behind her back! Then she held Punkin out in front of her and said, “This is your present Chart. We hope you like her!” Chart looked at sis, backed up and said, “I don’t want it and started to cry.” When I say cry, she sobbed. Sis backed up not knowing what to do and just stood there with Punkin:( Mom and sis were so afraid that Chart wasn’t going to keep Punkin and we would have another dog…not that we would have minded! Punkin was lots of fun and we really liked her!
Chart’s best friend took Punkin and we loaded all of Punkin’s stuff up for them to take to Chart. They took Punkin to Chart’s house and we were all very nervous waiting to see what Chart was going to do. The good news…Chart kept Punkin and they have become really close. Punkin really doesn’t like anyone but Chart and has become super spoiled! And guess what, Chart just sent mom a picture of a new little Morkie that she just got! Punkin has a new little sis! Her name is Piper and she weighs 1 pound! She is so little…you might say she is microscopic (VBP) in size!

Meet Piper! Isn’t she cute!
Mom and sis were relieved that Chart fell in love with Punkin but you never really know if someone is going to want a dog for a present! It never really occurred to mom and sis that Chart might not want this adorable dog until the day of the banquet and I must say…that was a little late to be thinking about that! So if you are thinking about gifting a dog to a friend, think twice! Do lots of research and make sure your friend will want the dog. Best to make sure than to have a disaster on your hands!

Great story! I guess if you give a pet as a gift you just need to be able to keep the pet yourself if the recipient does not want the pet.

The best thing is to offer the dog (or kitty) if you already know the person wants one. My human got me as a birthday present from her boyfriend (now husband) who knew she really really wanted a kitty and she chose me too!
