Why Are Dogs So Loyal?
I received an email with several pictures of loyal dogs and it got me to thinking…why are dogs so loyal? I always had a dog while I was growing up. My first dog was a Terrier/Chihuahua mix that I bought for $5 from a friend. I was really proud of myself for buying that dog until I got home and my parents weren’t very happy with me :( I named him Friskey and he turned out to be an awesome dog. I bought him when I was in Kindergarten and he passed over the rainbow bridge when I was a Freshman in college. He was my first dog and he will always have a special place in my heart. I have had several dogs since Friskey, each one special in their own way! I feel like everyone of my dogs would have done anything for me…well, I would like to believe that! So, I got to thinking…why are dogs so loyal? Why do they follow us around, lay at our feet, sit in our laps, look at us longingly when we are leaving the house, and always greet us with a wagging tail when we return home?
Dogs are ‘Mans’ Best Friend.’ This title doesn’t come lightly and it comes from centuries of dogs being our companions. Dogs will always be at your side through the good and through the bad. Dogs are the favored pet and the proof is in the numbers…39% of American households own dogs. Dogs are probably the favored pet because they are easy to train, are affectionate, and for many, they are more than just a pet. Dogs can be hunting companions, guards, protectors, helpers, guides, and they can be our best friend.
There really isn’t a scientific explanation for why dogs are so loyal. But it is true that dogs will be loyal to their masters for life. When a person loves, cares for, and protects a dog, that dog will be entirely loyal to that person. It is believed that one of the reasons dogs are so loyal is because they have a pack mentality which is a social structure that is similar to ours. Wild dogs roam in groups or families of dogs to find food and to stay safe. It is believed that a pet dog considers the humans he lives with part of his pack or his family. Dogs are completely loyal to their pack and will protect their family members if they are threatened.
The way you treat your dog in this life determines your place in heaven. – chukchi proverb
Dogs will make you smile, make you cry, lift your spirits, and be loyal to the bitter end. God created dogs to bring us love, happiness and companionship. Having a dog in your life is a true treasure and a gift from God. Dogs are special because they don’t care if you are rich or if you are poor. Dogs are the most loyal animals on earth.
These are the pictures I received in an email and that started me thinking…
