About Earthborn Holistic
Earthborn Holistic is owned by Midwestern Pet Foods, one of the oldest pet food companies in the country, having fed dogs and cats since 1926. With recipes developed using superfood supplements and fruits and vegetables like blueberries and carrots, which support immune health, Earthborn’s dry and wet products provide above-average nutrition for a competitive price.
How does Earthborn Holistic stack up as a brand?
Earthborn Holistic DRY Food
Earthborn Holistics mostly uses concentrated meals to provide the main source of nutrition in their dry foods. On one hand, this gives their products a highly favorable nutritional profile, with average protein and fat content coming in well above the overall industry averages. However, the use of meals can mean that dogs miss out on the minerals, nutrients, and hydration present in real whole meat.
Luckily, Earthborn recognizes this issue and supplements their meat meal ingredients with a range of fruits, vegetables, and gluten-free grains. These include antioxidant-rich blueberries and cranberries, as well as fiber-rich flaxseed.

Earthborn Holistic WET Food
Taken together, Earthborn’s wet food range provides optimal levels of protein, fat, and fiber, meeting or exceeding industry averages for each food group. We like how the brand opts for complex sources of carbohydrate and fiber such as sweet potatoes and carrots, rather than cheap fillers. The short length of Earthborn wet food recipe lists and the presence of many whole foods is another great sign.

Brand Recalls
Earthborn Holistic doesn’t appear in the FDA’s database of product recalls and withdrawals, which is an awesome indication that production processes are closely monitored for quality control. Furthermore, none of the brands owned by EarthBorn’s parent company, Midwestern Pet Foods, has ever had a recall.
UPDATE (2021): While EarthBorn continues to be free of recalls, another MidWestern brand, Sportmix, has recently recalled a range of products due to high levels of aflatoxin, a dangerous toxin produced by grain-dwelling mold that can be fatal. Tragically, this recall has been linked to 28 deaths and 8 illnesses in dogs who ate the now-recalled products. |
