Pro Pac Dog Food: Review

Pro Pac is a dry food-only brand that offers three different types of kibble, all using a pretty standard set of ingredients. Despite calling themselves a family-owned business, Pro Pac isn’t an independent company: it operates under parent brand Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. Midwestern also owns the brand Earthborn Holistic, Wholesomes, and Sportmix. Pro Pac claims that all of their formulas are made in their own company-owned facilities.

Pro Pac’s top dry food is a chicken meal and brown rice recipe, made for large breed dogs. It has a nice balance of protein, fat, and carbs for our larger furry friends. Large dogs are also prone to joint concerns, so the added glucosamine and chondroitin help maintain healthy joints in larger dogs. 

Made using chicken meal as the top ingredient this recipe has an adequate amount of protein at 23%, and fat at 13%. The fiber content is what really stands out at 5%, meaning it is a recipe that won’t cause any unwanted constipation. The antioxidants from beets, blueberries, and cranberries also help to support a health immune system.

Averaging out the nutritional levels across all Pro Pac products shows that the brand sits just below normal industry levels for proteins and fats, and slightly above the average fiber levels. Pro Pac develops this nutritional profile through a range of whole, processed, and concentrated ingredients, including:

• named meat meals
• rice and brans
• vitamin-rich vegetables and fruits such as apples and blueberries
• and a range of vitamin and amino acid supplements

While we believe that dogs can thrive on moderate amounts of named meat meal and whole-grain ingredients, we also recommend that owners provide their pups with as many whole meat foods as possible. Whole meat is an optimal source of essential amino acids, nutrients, and hydration.

Pro Pac is free of product recalls according to the FDA and AVMA databases, and doesn’t show up on other reputable online sources. However, other Midwestern Pet Foods brands have issued serious recalls:

• December 2020: The FDA issued a recall for several Sportmix product lines due to potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin. This was due to reports of more than 28 fatalities and multiple illnesses in dogs who were consuming Sportmix.

It’s difficult to judge the extent to which cross-contamination occurs between different Midwestern Foods brands. However, we recommend that concerned owners steer clear of any brand that’s even affiliated with a manufacturing plant in which recalls have been issued.
